Bing Lee is an Australianretailing company, a chain of superstores specialising in consumer electronics, computer and telecommunication goods. Bing Lee is the largest privately held electrical retail business in New South Wales with 41 stores (13 franchised) and a turnover of about $490 million.^[1]^[2]

History[edit]

The business began when Bing Lee (Chinese: 李冰,^[3]Pinyin: lǐ bīng) purchased an electrical repair business in Fairfield, New South Wales, in 1957. Lee, along with his son Ken Lee & Cedric Lee (Chinese: 李光裕, Pinyin: lǐ guāng yù), transformed the repair business into an electrical product retail and repair/installation business named Bing Lee Electronics (Chinese: 并力电器,^[4]^[5]Pinyin: bìng lì diàn qì).^[6] Initial growth came from the surge in demand for televisions, as well as a host of other household items like washing machines, cooking equipment, heaters and audio equipment. Bing Lee was a member of Retravision NSW for a number of years before leaving and joining the Narta Group. Bing Lee opened new stores in other Sydney suburbs and across New South Wales.

Bing Lee, the founder, died in 1987 (aged 79) and Ken was appointed Chairman.^[7] Ken Lee died on 21 December 2007 of cancer, aged 75. His eldest son, Lionel Lee, took over as chief executive of the company.

Around the turn of the century, the franchisee concept was introduced to the business. Today 16 of the 40 Bing Lee retail outlets are run by franchisees. Bing Lee also had the management rights to the 'Sony Centre' concept in NSW and the ACT later closing those stores. And now runs a MIELE BING LEE Concept store for Miele in Drummoyne NSW.

Sponsorships[edit]

Bing Lee sponsored the Bulldogs Rugby League Football Club until allegations that players were allegedly involved in a gang rape in Coffs Harbour. ^[8]

Bing Lee signed a 2-year sponsorship deal with A-League club Sydney FC in February 2007. On Sydney's Home strip the front is taken up with Bing Lee, and on the away jersey it is on the front and back of the right leg of the shorts.

In July 2009 they re-signed for another year along with Japanese electrical company Sony as Sydney FC's major sponsors.

They are also one of the major sponsors of the Sydney SwansAFL team.

They also sponsored Seven Network's The Amazing Race Australia.

SYDNEY: As part of Bing Lee’s marketing partnership with the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, the retailer is offering customers who purchase certain products from its stores a family pass to the zoo.

From Sunday 6 May until Thursday 31 May, everyone who purchases either an LCD or plasma television valued at $1,000 or more, a digital video camera or a digital SLR camera will receive a bonus family pass to either the Taronga Zoo or the Western Plains Zoo.

“The latest promotion from Bing Lee coincides with their sponsorship of Taronga Zoo’s Francois Langurs to ensure vital conservation programs continue to help preserve the existence of the Langurs in the wild. The Francois Langurs, a small leaf eating monkey, are featured as part of the new ‘Wild Asia’ exhibit which also houses Taronga’s Asian Elephants,” said a Bing Lee press release.

The vouchers are redeemable up until 31 July, allowing two adults and two children aged between four and 15 years old or one adult and three children to enter either of the zoos for free.

“Bing Lee’s sponsorship will also provide visitors to the zoo with the availability of more baby buggies to ensure mum and dad are able to easily move around the park with the children safely tucked away in the stroller,” said the press release.

Conditions apply and the vouchers are available only while stocks last.
